OTTAWA, ON, July 1<\/span>4<\/span>, 2020 \u2013\u00a0<\/span>Sustainable Development Technology Canada\u202f(SDTC) today announced funding for four Canadian start-up companies in the food,\u00a0<\/span>agriculture<\/span>\u00a0and aquaculture. Two of the firms are based in Halifax, one in St. John\u2019s, and one in Montreal.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One of these companies is an\u00a0<\/span>agtech<\/span>\u00a0firm developing organic products to replace chemicals for disease control. One is building new software in the dairy industry to manage the milk supply chain more efficiently. A third firm is using artificial intelligence to reduce food waste and mortality on fish farms. The fourth team is also working in the fish industry, developing active compostable packaging that extends the shelf life of fresh fish.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The funding comes from SDTC\u2019s Seed Fund. Piloted in 2019, the Seed Fund\u00a0<\/span>can\u00a0<\/span>support up to 100 companies per year.\u00a0<\/span>Successful applicants receive between $50,000 to $100,000 from SDTC, enabling them to unlock even greater funding from their private equity partners.\u202fIn total, 17 small businesses received funding from SDTC in the first round of 2020-2021, which concluded at the end of June.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0 \u202f\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Central to the success of SDTC\u2019s Seed Fund is its partnership model. SDTC partners with business accelerators and incubators across the country to identify high-potential start-up firms. With specialized knowledge of their regions and target industries, the accelerators nominate companies in their portfolios that meet SDTC funding criteria. Any accelerator in Canada is welcome to apply to SDTC to be a partner in the Seed Fund.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Impactful Health Research & Development Inc.<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>(Montreal, QC),\u00a0<\/span>supported by\u00a0<\/span>Innovacorp<\/span><\/b><\/a>,<\/span>\u00a0is developing active compostable packaging to extend the shelf life of fresh foods,\u00a0<\/span>particularly fish, increasing return on investment along the value chain while r<\/span>educing waste.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

Milk\u00a0Moovement<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0(St. John\u2019s, NL),\u00a0supported by\u00a0<\/span>Genesis<\/span><\/b><\/a>,\u00a0develops cloud-based software to\u00a0improve the efficiency of\u00a0the dairy supply chain through features like transport monitoring,\u00a0production tracking\u00a0and route optimization,\u00a0reducing\u00a0the carbon footprint\u00a0of dairy trucks.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

Reazent<\/span><\/b><\/a>\u00a0(Halifax, NS),<\/span>\u00a0supported by\u00a0<\/span>Verschuren Centre<\/span><\/b><\/a>, makes efficient<\/span>, high-efficacy<\/span>\u00a0organic replacement<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0for agrochemicals. These products help\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>crop disease control, yield growth, and abiotic stress resistance in the agricultural industry.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
