OTTAWA, ON, December 16, 2020 \u2013\u202fIn partnership with accelerators across Canada,\u202fSustainable Development Technology Canada\u202f(SDTC)\u202ftoday announced\u202ffunding for\u00a018\u00a0Canadian start-ups\u202fthat\u202fare developing the sustainable solutions\u202fthat will enable a Net Zero future.<\/p>\n

“Congratulations to all recipients! These investments help secure Canada\u2019s leadership in clean technologies today so all Canadians can benefit from a more economically and environmentally sustainable future,\u201d said the Honourable Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry. \u201cOur Government is proud to support these companies across Canada as they drive innovation, create well-paying jobs, and help us meet our climate goals.”<\/p>\n

\u201cDespite the challenges of the current economic environment, innovation continues to thrive across the country,\u201d said SDTC President and CEO Leah Lawrence. \u201cThe entrepreneurs funded through our Seed Fund\u2019s\u00a0second\u00a0round reflect the breadth\u00a0and variety\u00a0of cleantech solutions\u00a0that governments and corporations are looking for to meet their Net Zero commitments over the next ten years.\u201d<\/p>\n

The\u00a0high-potential start-up firms\u00a0receiving funding\u00a0are developing technologies that\u00a0span a variety of\u00a0sectors, from\u00a0data-enabled\u00a0technologies\u00a0such as the internet of things, quantum computing and\u00a0blockchain, to\u00a0technologies\u00a0that\u00a0enable\u00a0greater sustainability in farming and the food industry, to carbon capture and storage\u00a0to\u00a0innovative solutions\u00a0to reduce CO2 emissions in the construction and\u00a0transportation industries.<\/p>\n

SDTC\u2019s\u202fSeed Fund provides early-stage cleantech entrepreneurs with one-time grants of\u00a0$50,000 to $100,000.\u00a0Seed Fund applicants are nominated by a select group of Canadian accelerators and other entrepreneurial service organizations from\u00a0across the country.<\/p>\n

SDTC continues to expand its reach across Canada\u2019s\u00a0innovation\u00a0ecosystems,\u00a0with\u00a0nine\u00a0new accelerators\u00a0included in\u00a0the 16 organizations\u00a0which\u00a0nominated\u00a0successful applicants in this\u00a0recent\u00a0round. SDTC is actively looking to partner with incubators and accelerators in every region of Canada to support and strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship\u00a0where it happens.<\/p>\n

A full list of the newly funded companies and their accelerator sponsors appears\u202fbelow. The\u202fnext\u202fcall for\u202fSeed Fund\u00a0applications will\u202flaunch\u202fin January 2021.<\/p>\n

Companies approved for funding<\/strong><\/p>\n

Below are\u00a018\u00a0Canadian\u202fcompanies approved by\u202fSDTC\u202ffor\u202fseed\u202ffunding\u202fduring\u202fthe\u00a0second round of\u202fthe 2020\/21 fiscal year.\u202fThe accelerator\u202fpartner\u202fthat nominated each company is also\u202flisted.<\/p>\n

  1. Winecrush<\/strong><\/a>(Penticton, BC), supported by\u00a0Foresight<\/strong><\/a>, upcycles the derivatives of wine making into high performance food ingredients.<\/li>\n
  2. CleanO2<\/strong><\/a>(Calgary, AB), supported by\u00a0CDL Rockies<\/strong><\/a>, offers energy demand reduction through heat recovery and offers profit sharing agreements with customers for pearl ash sales.<\/li>\n
  3. Carbonova<\/strong><\/a>(Calgary, AB),\u00a0supported\u00a0by\u00a0Innovate Calgary<\/strong><\/a>, commercializes a chemical process that uses greenhouse gases\u00a0and natural gas as a feedstock to produce sustainable and economical carbon nanofibers.<\/li>\n
  4. Future Fields<\/strong><\/a>(Edmonton, AB), supported by\u00a0<\/strong>TEC Edmonton<\/strong><\/a>, is a biotechnology company that serves the cellular agriculture industry by producing cell growth media to produce lab grown meat.<\/li>\n
  5. Carbon-Block Inc<\/strong><\/a>.<\/strong>(Winnipeg, MB), supported by\u00a0<\/strong>North Forge<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0is developing hardware backed by blockchain, to automate the creation and verification of carbon offsets.<\/li>\n
  6. Just Vertical<\/strong><\/a>(Brampton, ON), supported by\u00a0the Centre for Social Innovation<\/strong><\/a>, is an indoor hydroponic\u00a0company that creates furniture which also grows food.<\/li>\n
  7. Argentum Electronics<\/strong><\/a>(Cobourg, ON), supported by\u00a0Clean Energy Zone<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0has developed an end-to-end internet-of-things platform\u00a0that generates insights from human\u00a0behaviour\u00a0and uses the data to optimize a building\u2019s energy usage.<\/li>\n
  8. DuXion Motors<\/strong><\/a>(St. John\u2019s, NL), supported by\u00a0MaRS<\/a><\/strong>, is an advanced motor design and manufacturing company\u00a0that is developing next generation electric propulsion systems for aircrafts and UAVs.<\/li>\n
  9. Ardra Bio<\/strong><\/a>(Toronto, ON), supported by\u00a0UTEST<\/strong><\/a>, produces natural ingredients for the food and cosmetics industries\u00a0using fermentation of renewable raw material such as sugar and agriculture biomass.<\/li>\n
  10. Pulse Industrial<\/strong><\/a>(Kitchener, ON), supported by\u00a0Velocity<\/strong><\/a>, is an\u00a0internet of things\u00a0company\u00a0that produces smart monitors for mechanical\u00a0valves (known as steam taps) to detect leaks, allowing\u00a0plants to reduce CO2 emissions.<\/li>\n
  11. Nord Quantique <\/strong>(Sherbrooke, QC) supported by\u00a0ACET<\/strong><\/a>, develops quantum processors based on second-generation technology to deploy the\u00a0full potential of quantum computing applications.<\/li>\n
  12. Viridis Terra<\/strong><\/a>(Quebec City, QC), supported by\u00a0AG Bio<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong> specializes\u00a0in the restoration of degraded ecosystems, lands, and\u00a0soils;\u00a0and on the formulation, implementation, and sustainable management of large-scale reforestation\u00a0and landscape restoration projects.<\/li>\n
  13. Nexus Robotics<\/strong><\/a>(Halifax, NS), supported by\u00a0Le Camp<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0has created an autonomous\u00a0robot\u00a0which uses a camera system to differentiate between weeds and crops, providing a reliable and cost-effective\u00a0farming solution.<\/li>\n
  14. Oneka Technologies<\/strong><\/a>(Sherbrooke, QC), supported by\u00a0Sherbrooke Innopole<\/strong><\/a>,<\/strong> is a desalination company that harnesses wave power to produce fresh water.<\/li>\n
  15. Graphite Innovation and Technologies\u00a0(GIT)<\/strong><\/a>(Dartmouth, NS) supported by\u00a0Innovacorp<\/a>,<\/strong> is a graphene technology producer\u00a0which specializes in marine protective coatings.<\/li>\n
  16. Planetary Hydrogen<\/strong><\/a>(Gatineau, QC), supported by\u00a0Innovacorp<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0produces\u00a0hydrogen\u00a0while\u00a0capturing\u00a0CO2\u00a0and storing\u00a0it\u00a0as a bicarbonate that fights ocean acidification.<\/li>\n
  17. Alterbiota<\/strong><\/a>(Toronto, ON), supported by the\u00a0Verschuren Centre<\/strong><\/a>, manufactures low-cost,\u00a0high-performance\u00a0biographene\u00a0additives for the concrete industry.<\/li>\n
  18. Kraken Sense<\/strong><\/a>(Sydney, NS), supported by\u00a0the\u00a0Verschuren Centre<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0has created\u00a0an\u00a0automated pathogen detection platform, with sensors which can\u00a0detect bacterial contamination\u00a0in produce in real time.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
