We are on the verge of massive\u00a0<\/span>economic<\/span>\u00a0transformation.<\/span>\u00a0Spurred on by public and private sector commitments to achieve\u00a0<\/span>#<\/span>NetZero<\/span>\u00a0carbon emissions, investment in sustainable technologies is growing exponentially.\u00a0<\/span>R<\/span>ecent research by PWC shows that the investment in \u201cclimate-tech\u201d\u00a0<\/span>between<\/span>\u00a02013\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a02019\u00a0<\/span>has risen\u00a0<\/span>3750%<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>with\u00a0<\/span>investments of\u00a0<\/span>$16.1 billion in venture capital in 2019<\/span>\u00a0alone<\/span>\u00a0–<\/span>three\u00a0<\/span>times\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0amount<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that is currently\u00a0<\/span>invest<\/span>ed<\/span>\u00a0in<\/span>\u00a0Artificial Intelligence.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

T<\/span>his investment\u00a0<\/span>boom is great news for Canada\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>#<\/span>cleantech entrepreneu<\/span>rs, who are raising money, hiring new employees and pivoting their businesses online.\u00a0<\/span>But as these companies grow, their ability to scale their business here in Canada becomes increasingly challenging.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In normal times, the incentives for early-stage companies in emerging industries to leave Canada are relentless:\u00a0<\/span>l<\/span>arger foreign markets with easier access to customers<\/span>\u00a0and investors<\/span>; regulatory environments more supportive of emerging technologies; the list goes on and on.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But t<\/span>hese are not normal times<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Current border restrictions have made i<\/span>nternational and even interprovincial visits to demonstration sites<\/span>\u00a0difficult<\/span>\u00a0(<\/span>if not impossible<\/span>)<\/span>, and\u00a0<\/span>the ability to translate virtual\u00a0<\/span>meetings into\u00a0<\/span>formal\u00a0<\/span>business arrangements and sales has proven to be challenging.\u00a0<\/span>On the procurement side, d<\/span>ecision-making has slowed at larger organizations as resources needed for project pilots and climate tech\u00a0<\/span>adoption<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>have been diverted to pandemic-response. This diversion of resources has created a backlog that may take months, if not years, to unwind.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The current<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>business environment<\/span>\u00a0coupled with zero-cost global capital fueled by Build-Back-Better policies, net-zero commitments and the demand for\u00a0<\/span>#<\/span>ESG investment products\u00a0<\/span>is accelerating the trend\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0Canada\u2019s best cleantech ideas<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and their ass<\/span>ociated highly skilled\u00a0<\/span>jobs,\u00a0<\/span>moving to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>other jurisdictions like\u00a0<\/span>the United States and China.<\/span>\u00a0We see<\/span>\u00a0evidence of\u00a0<\/span>this in\u00a0<\/span>the r<\/span>ecent announcements of Canadian climate tech companies taking advantage of IPOs, reverse takeovers and SPACs\u00a0<\/span>-all\u00a0<\/span>replete with plans for the use of funds to build manufacturing and other private infrastructure in places other than Canada.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fortunately, there is\u00a0<\/span>still time to counter this trend\u00a0<\/span>if we make<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>a deliberate effort to build out the domestic market and strengthen supply chains in emerging climate tech industries where Canada has a comparative advantage.\u00a0<\/span>That is<\/span>\u00a0why\u00a0<\/span>Sustainable Development Technology Canada<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(SDTC)\u00a0<\/span>and the\u00a0<\/span>Coordinated Accessible National\u00a0<\/span>(CAN)\u00a0<\/span>Health\u00a0<\/span>Network<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are taking\u00a0<\/span>steps to\u00a0<\/span>chart a different future for Canadian innovators by helping to grow\u00a0<\/span>an integrated and re<\/span>ceptive\u00a0<\/span>domestic\u00a0<\/span>marketplace<\/span>, so they lead and grow internationally.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
